It has come to my attention that this blog and my other one (otherendoftheinter.net) have been infected with malware that downloads malicious software onto the reader’s computer.

Trust me when I say this is not intentional and I do not as yet have a clear idea how this happened. I have spent 18 of the last 24 hours trying to fix the problem, taking breaks only to eat meals and handle certain bodily functions that can only be put off for so long. I have gone so far as to delete all the wordpress files and install a fresh copy then re-install various plugins and themes, lastly adding back pictures and media that I had uploaded.

No matter what order I do this in and how long I wait between each step, the problem continues to return. I am going to make one more attempt after I get some sleep and if I can’t get it fixed then the problem may be in my wordpress database. If it comes down to deleting the database and starting everything from scratch, then I haven’t decided what I’ll do.

As stated in the “What We Do” page, I do occasionally do paid posts, however, once a site has been labeled as a distributor of malware I doubt that many people are going to want to advertise there. Given that those advertisements are how I pay for hosting my blogs, it is entirely possible that if I cannot fix the problem then it’s very likely I just won’t maintain a blog at all any more.

I would like to express a heartfelt and sarcastic “Thanks a whole hell of a lot” to the destructive idiots who release maleware like this into the public to cause problems for people such as myself who have never done them any harm at all.

Recently we talked about James Doohan and we mentioned his missing finger. Most people today would have seen that as a reason to fill out a disability application and collect a government check for the rest of their lives. Instead, Mr. Doohan pursued an acting career and gave us a Chief Engineer that nobody else could – with no offense to Simon Pegg.

Kudos to you, Mr. Doohan, for not taking the easy way out.

We have decided that it would be pretty nice to have a green Orion slave girl around the house. It would be great, just for shock value when friends and family come over and they see a young woman whose skin is completely green cleaning house, washing dishes, and serving coffee.

Surely you wouldn’t be sitting there thinking that we had some other ideas in mind for what she could do, did you?

It was on this date in 1960 that America’s first nuclear powered submarine, the U. S. S. Enterprise, was launched.

The Naval aircraft carrier (CVN-65) is the second-oldest commissioned vessel in the U. S. Navy, after the wooden-hulled, three-masted frigate USS Constitution.

As of this writing, the Enterprise is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2013 after what will have been 51 years of service – the most of any ship in U.S. Naval history.

While the aircraft carrier itself doesn’t have anything to do with a science fiction related blog, it still is worth mentioning because of a certain StarShip which bears the same name as well as the fact that the carrier made an appearance in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Toward the end of Season One of Star Trek The Next Generation, in an episode titled “Arsenal Of Freedom”, the crew encounters a planet that has no life, the result of a long-ago war. On the planet they encounter an automated sales hologram who insists on demonstrating the weapons that it was selling – to both sides in the war. The weapon in question bears a striking resemblance to the Symbol LS2208 bar code reader sold by POS Micro.

One can’t help but wonder if the guy who designed this device was a fan of TNG, because the resemblance between the bar code scanner and the alien weapon is absolutely striking.
