Scientists have developed an aluminum-based ceramic that is transparent and almost as strong as metallic aluminum.
Aluminum oxynitride, or AION, is four times harder than fused silica glass, 85 per cent as hard as sapphire and stable up to a temperature of 1,200C.
At 1.6 inches thick AION can stop a .50 caliber bullet.
